Students thank you so much for the teacher appreciation cards and gifts!! They all meant so much to me :) All of your get well wishes were extremely warm and they have definitely put a smile on my face.

The Social Studies EOC(End of Course) Exam is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. The Social Studies final exam is scheduled for Wednesday May 27th. I am posting the study guide for the EOC and Final Exam. Please print this out and begin studying. Students your behavior was fabulous and you represented Landon very well :) So very proud of you ALL!

The Busch Gardens trip is official!!! We are heading to Tampa June 4th for our Team B end of the year trip :) Permission slips are available and will be distributed on Monday!! The cost of the trip is $80 a person. Yes, we NEED chaperones and ALL chaperones have a seat on the bus. There are 18 chaperone spots!!! Remember to attend good behavior is a must.

Letters have been sent home to all chaperones. Please review the information inside. There is one small correction. The letters mention parking passes being enclosed for parents meeting us there. I would like ALL parents chaperoning to meet at Julia Landon by 8:30 AM on Thursday. Parking passes will be issued at that time. Wristbands will also be issued at that time. We will leave school at 9:00 AM. Please make certain your child has given you the parent letter that I distributed in class today for parents chaperoning. The World of Nations field trip is Thursday April 30. We will leave Landon at 9:00 AM. Below is a list of chaperones. On Thursday April 30 we will go to World of Nations. Permission slips were handed out today in class. Signed forms along with $10 cash are due no later than Wednesday.

Parents we need chaperones! Due to limited seating on the bus we can only have 6 parents ride along with us to Metropolitan Park. If you plan to ride on the bus with your child the cost is around $6.00. However, there is no limit on chaperones who meet us at the park. Admission to the park is free for chaperones. In order to be a chaperone you must indicate this on the permission slip as well as sign the chaperone responsibility on field trips form.

Annotated Bibliography

An annotated bibliography is required for all categories. It should contain all sources that provided usable information or new perspectives in preparing your entry. You will look at many more sources than you actually use. You should list only those sources that contributed to the development of your entry. Sources of visual materials and oral interviews must be included. The annotations for each source must explain how the source was used and how it helped you understand your topic.

For example:

Bates, Daisy. The Long Shadow of Little Rock.
1st ed. New York: David McKay Co. Inc., 1962.

Daisy Bates was the president of the Arkansas NAACP and the one who met and listened to the students each day. This first-hand account was very important to my paper because it made me more aware of the feelings of the people involved.

An annotation normally should be about 1-3 sentences long. You might be tempted to create page-long annotations to impress people. Don't do it! Lengthy annotations are usually unnecessary and inappropriate, and might be considered an effort to "pad" the bibliography.

The Contest Rule Book states that the annotations "must explain how the source was used and how it helped you understand your topic." Do not recount what the source said.

In addition to explaining how you used a source or how it helped you, you sometimes need to include some additional information in an annotation. Here are some examples:
Classification of primary or secondary source. You should use the annotation to explain why you categorized a particular source as primary or secondary, If that is likely to be at all controversial. Historians do sometimes disagree and there's not always one right answer, so justify your choice to the judges.

Secondary source which included primary sources. You also may use the annotation to explain that a book or other secondary source included several primary sources used for the paper. Examples: "This book included three letters between person X on the frontier and person Y back in New England, which provided insight into the struggles and experiences of the settlers." "This book provided four photos of settlers on the Great Plains and their homes, which were used on the exhibit."

Fuller explanation of credits for documentaries. You are supposed to give credit in the documentary itself for photos or other primary sources, but you can do this in a general way, such as by writing, "Photos from: National Archives, Ohio Historical Society, A Photographic History of the Civil War" rather than listing each photo individually in the documentary credits, which would take up too much of your allotted 10 minutes. You then must use the annotation in the bibliography to provide more detailed information.

Should I list each photograph or document individually? You should handle this differently in notes than in the bibliography. When you are citing sources for specific pieces of information or interpretations, such as in footnotes or endnotes, you should cite the individual document or photograph. In the bibliography, however, you would cite only the collection as a whole, not all the individual items. You should include the full title of the collection (e.g., Digges-Sewall Papers or the Hutzler Collection), the institution, city and state where the collection is located (e.g., Maryland Historical Society, Baltimore, Md.). You can use the annotation to explain that this collection provided 7 photographs which you used in your exhibit or that collection provided 14 letters which were important in helping you trace what happened. The same treatment applies to newspaper articles. In the footnotes or endnotes, you should cite the individual articles and issues of a newspaper. In the bibliography, you would list only the newspaper itself, not the individual issues or articles; you can use the annotation to explain that you used X number of days of the newspaper for your research.

How many sources should I have for my annotated bibliography? We can't tell you a specific number of sources, as that will vary by the topic and by the resources to which you have reasonable access. For some topics, such as the Civil War or many 20th-century U.S. topics, there are many sources available to you. For other topics, such as those in ancient history or non-U.S. history, there likely are far fewer sources available to you. The more good sources you have, the better, but don't pad your bibliography. Only list items which you actually use; if you looked at a source but it didn't help you at all, don't list it in your bibliography.

To ensure success for seventh grade, our team has made a change in the homework/latework policy. Your child may turn in late work, but it will be penalized. As a team we provided many opportunities the first and second nine weeks for you to submit late/missing assignments. It is our noticing that it is only enabling you to give less than 100% effort. Our team's philosophy is that we need to help you move forward. If you are constantly NOT completing assignments, NOT turning in assignments, and consistently stopping to do make-up work then you are NOT making forward progress which hinders us ALL. The question here is, What is the lesson learned?

In light of the approaching deadline for Science Fair, I have decided to extend the History Fair due date. I would like us to refocus and begin by writing an effective outline. We are going to take a step back and move forward from the outline. I think this will assist many of you with writing your note cards, because the outline will help you organize your note cards. Your note cards should correspond with areas on your outline.

Today in class we will review the outline and discuss what the focus should be for your research. Once you have your outline in the correct format, this will help guide your note cards. For this weekend I would like all of you to think deeply about the individual you chose to research for History Fair. It is to your advantage to select a person that you do not know much about. The point of the project is to examine the individual's role in history; thus the theme The Individual in History. Let me remind you that you are not doing a biography on the person. Instead, you are choosing a significant event/time period in their lives that led to historical change. You will consider the individuals actions and how those actions, how this person's role in a key event changed history.

Homework

This weekend you will complete the rough maps we started in class today. They will be collected on Monday. I will also check for vocabulary at that time for the entire Ch. 3. Your vocabulary should be in three columns.

New Nine Weeks!!

As we embark on our journey into the 2nd nine weeks, it is safe to say you have officially been ushered in as 6th graders! Congratulations on the successful completion of your first quarter as students at Julia Landon College Preparatory Leadership Development School. With that accomplishment under your belts comes responsibility. You have been adjusted to middle school and it is time to take off the training wheels. At Julia Landon, we are all leaders and leaders must be held accountable. I hope you all will take the new quarter as an opportunity to become a leader. The expectation from Team B for class work/homework is that on the fourth late assignment you will be issued NO credit. Excused absences are the exception. For projects, there will be a letter grade penalty per day that the project is late. It is important to come to class prepared each and everyday. This means coming to class with assignments completed and ready to be turned in. Remember that Team B teachers will accept three late assignments with penalty; however, on the fourth late assignment you will NOT be given ANY credit. Thank you for an amazing first nine weeks, let's roll up our sleeves as we enter the second quarter.

You should study ch. 2 vocabulary as well as comprehension & critical thinking questions throughout the sections in the chapter. Today in class you all conquered chapter 1. We wrapped up our section on prehistory and we now shift into The Birthplace of Civilization. For classwork/homework you were to Read ch. 2 section 1 and answer the Identify and Apply questions on p. 29. In addition, you will define the section vocabulary: scribe, Fertile Crescent, city-state, polytheism, myth, fertile, terrace, and rival.
It has taken longer than I expected to grade the comic strips, but I will have those grades along with the quiz grades posted by Monday evening. I'll work as quickly as I can to get the test graded by mid-week.

Today in class we wrapped up sections 1 and 2 from chapter 1. We are proceeding with section 3 "The Beginnings of Civilization". Students were to preview section 3 and form two questions about what they observed from previewing the text.

Progress reports were issued today. Many of you were pleasantly surprised, and some of you were simply shocked. The good news is that you can CHANGE your grade. The bad news is that you can CHANGE your grade. You must come to class prepared every day. This means having your homework with you, completed. For those students who have a 70% or below, I am offering an opportunity. It MUST be completed, NO EXCUSES, by Friday 9/12 in order to be counted.

Grades were severely affected by missing assignments. This is because we only have had a few assignments and some of them were worth a lot of points. There is plently of time to change your grade!! We have a quiz this week and in class assignments. Leaving your hw in your locker is unacceptable. Be prepared, be proactive!!

Hello Students!!! I am so excited to meet you all! I had the opportunity to meet a few of you during orientation, but for those of you I have yet to meet I cannot wait. I look forward to having a fun and exciting school year filled with learning!
